The Dermapen®

The Dermapen®

Aesthetic Medicine, anti-aging, Uncategorized
Have you heard of the Dermapen® or wondered what it does or whether you “need” it?  Chances are if you have any problems with your skin Dermapen® can probably help you! The device is not dissimilar to roller techniques or to conventional mesotherapy, in that the mechanism of action is to cause controlled microinjury that creates channels for delivery of product to the deeper layers of the skin.  Where the Dermapen® may be superior to these other means is that where mesotherapy uses only one needle, the Dermapen® has 12, and while mesotherapy is done by hand, the vibrating nature of the Dermapen® ensures that the surface area treated is far greater than that of mesotherapy.  The roller devices may be able to cover larger surface areas, however the nature…

We came across some calculations regarding Botox the other day that we find pretty incredible - too good not to share at least! Did you know that in 2013 Allergen made $2 billion off Botox Cosmetic?  Roughly extrapolated this would mean that about 3,8million Botox treatments were done.  Using this figure the wonderful people at the mirror.co.uk worked out that the grand total number of grams of cosmetic Botox used in the entire world in 2013 is 0,02grams.  And using that figure we can deduce that ONE GRAM of Botox costs around $100 billion. Isn't that mind blowing? For more information or to book a Botox treatment (in Cape Town, South Africa) you can call us on (021) 6833048, or pop us an email on capetownaesthetics@gmail.com

The 8-point “Liquid Facelift”

The 8-point “Liquid Facelift”

Aesthetic Medicine, anti-aging, Uncategorized
The 8 point liquid facelift is a technique described by Dr Mauricio de Maio using dermal filler in 8 strategic points to achieve rejuvenation in a face that has suffered from volume loss due to aging. This technique provides a quick and easy solution to volume loss due to aging with little down time. It is done in your doctor’s office using topical anaesthetisation and usually takes about an hour to do, depending on your particular needs. Although the 8 points are visited in each patient, the treatment should be tailored to your own face, since volume loss is not uniform across all patients. Due to making use of only dermal fillers, it is entirely non-surgical and also non-permanent, which can be seen as a pro or a con depending…

Where can Botox® be injected?

Where can Botox® be injected?

Aesthetic Medicine, anti-aging, Uncategorized
Most of us know that Botox® can eliminate our frowns, but did you know what Botox® can give pleasing results in many other areas of the face, and even elsewhere on the body?  The diagram above shows us what these areas are. The 11: The most common complaint that people seeking Botox® have is that they have a permanent frown, making them look upset, angry and old. Botox® into your frown area will prevent you from forming the horizontal line across the top of your nose, as well as prevent you from drawing your brows towards the midline causing those vertical parallel lines between your brows. Horizontal lines running across the brow when raising the eyebrows are usually part and parcel of a treatment for frown lines (although this area…

What are dermal fillers?

What are dermal fillers?

Aesthetic Medicine, anti-aging, Uncategorized
Dermal fillers (usually just called fillers) can be considered to be “volumizers” as they add volume to the treated areas.  This is usually to replace lost volume, but they are often also used to enhance facial features such as the cheeks or lips by creating volume that may not ever have been there.  Fillers, not Botox®, are the culprits responsible for Kim Kardashian’s lips. The idea of “volumising” facial features was first explored in the 1800s where transplanted fat was used to correct a facial deformity.  This procedure, although greatly modified, is still used to this day by Plastic Surgeons.  Fat is the ideal filler as it is your own, meaning that your body cannot reject it and it lasts far longer than any foreign substance.  It also feels natural,…

Why you look old

Why you look old

Aesthetic Medicine, anti-aging, Uncategorized
There are so many reasons we start to look old, many of them physiological changes that are completely out of our control and wholly unstoppable, however there are also a whole host of things that we do every day that contribute to the visible signs of aging that make us feel haggard.  Here are a few of them and how to minimize them. THE SUN:  Yes, I know we need Vitamin D, but do you really think you’re at risk of Rickets?  Living in South Africa you are getting more UV exposure on the 22nd of June (mid-winter) than the Europeans are getting on that same day (mid-summer for them).  What that means is that when you walk from your house to your car or from the train to your…

What is Botox®?

Aesthetic Medicine, anti-aging, Uncategorized
We hear about “Botox®” constantly these days.  Whether someone in our office got it, or someone’s mom has had too much, or whether people are blaming your friend’s “trout pout” on it, we have all heard of it, or maybe even tried it.  If you haven’t yet tried it but are considering it there are probably a few things you should know about it before you take the plunge(r). Botox® is a trade name.  The word “Botox” should only be used when describing the Allergan Botulinum Toxin Type A.  Having said that, Botox® does seem like the easiest and shortest way to describe the neurotoxin used for cosmetic purposes, and so we can all understand why people who are actually using Dysport or Bocoture or another brand of Botulinum Toxin…
